This locale is well known for ruby corundum, but even more well know as one of the very few places in the U.S. where Lapis lazuli was found and mined.
Commercial mining has not been allowed in the Canyon for decades, but walk in access is still possible, however the trails are very hard to follow due to landslides, washouts and overgrowth.
